RHS Wolverine Family and Fans:
The district is considering moving the Homecoming Parade from Friday afternoon to Thursday evening, October 1. Before making a final decision, we would like to share the reasons for the proposed change and gather feedback from students, families, staff, and community members.
Proposed Schedule
5:45 p.m. — Homecoming Parade begins Thursday evening, Oct. 1st
Approximately 7:00 p.m. — Parade concludes at Tonkin
Following the parade — Burning of the “R" in the Tonkin Bowl, with food trucks available for students, families, and community members
Homecoming week has traditionally included an evening activity for high school students, including the burning of the “R.” Because no other activities are scheduled for Thursday evening this year, we are considering combining these two traditions and turning this into one, large community event.
Moving the parade to Thursday evening would provide several benefits:
Greater community participation: An evening parade may allow more families and community members to attend without needing to leave work during the afternoon.
A larger community celebration: Combining the parade, burning of the “R,” and food trucks could create a more inclusive homecoming event for students, families, alumni, and community members.
More student involvement: The entire student body would have the opportunity to participate in the parade and burning of the “R” since no other events are scheduled
Float Enhancements: Because the parade will be at dusk, lights and glow-sticks could be added to the floats
Simpler transportation and supervision: The district would not need to bus elementary students to and from the parade or ask RMS staff to escort middle school students to Main Street during the school day.
Fewer conflicts for student activities: Athletic teams and other student groups could still hold practices after school before participating in the parade.
Zero Lost Instructional Time: Students will remain in school for instructional time
Less pressure on football players: Players participating in the freshmore football game would not need to rush back to school immediately following a Friday afternoon parade to play their game
We recognize that moving the parade from its traditional Friday afternoon time may affect families and community members differently. No final decision has been made, and we would appreciate your input as we consider whether this change would strengthen the homecoming experience.
